Fieldwork Activities

Check out Dates we are going out, what Frogs/Toads we are looking for, and the Research we are conducting. Our field sites are in NW Florida.

Day Activities:

During the day, we check our frog tubes, ascend trees to process recording devices, and gather environmental data.

Night Activities:

At night, we gear up with headlamps and survey for nocturnal animals (frogs, snakes, insects, sleeping lizards, etc.).

Lab Work:

Analyzing data from our recording devices takes time. We identify frog and bird calls to track diversity, abundance, and presence of species.

Field Gear
This is what we recommend

  • Long-sleeve Shirt
  • Pants
  • Boots (depending on weather and last rain)
  • Hat
  • Neck gator (optional)

Field Gear
What we supply

  • Bug Spray
  • Mosquito nets
  • Snake hooks
  • Headlamps/Flashlights (limited supply)

Hazards: There is a reason why we recommend having a long sleeve shirt and pants – because of Poison Ivy, thorny plants like Smilax, and Wasps! We try to minimize exposure to Poison Ivy on trees, but in some places the ground is covered in it. Some of the palmetto plants are perfect structures for wasp nests. If you are highly allergic to wasps, please consider what needs to be done if you are stung. The Poison Ivy is typically a non-issue if wearing the correct clothing – I am highly sensitive to it myself – but being cautious is certainly encouraged nonetheless!
Flooding: The river gauge we check can be found here. If it is above 4 feet, the field sites are flooded and we will cancel the survey for that day.

Citizen Science

You can help even at home! We are trying to track invasive species in NW Florida – particularly the Cuban Treefrog (Osteopilus septentrionalis)

Snakes

Encounters with snakes can be used as teaching opportunities. We demonstrate safe ways to live amongst our slithering friends. Full handling classes offered by another excellent non-profit can be found here.

Invasive Plant Removal

We ID and remove some of the invasive plants that are taking over our field sites. Species include Chinese Tallow, Japanese Climbing Fern, and Cogongrass.
